Our interest in detecting magnetically triggered drug release has led to this study of electrochemical detection. Cyclic voltammetry at a glassy carbon electrode showed doxorubicin, a cancer drug, was electrochemically active in aqueous phosphate buffer. Oxidation of the hydroquinone functional group by differential pulse voltammetry was used to measure the concentration of doxorubicin. A plot of peak current as a function of concentration was linear in the range 3 to 60 micromolar. Salinomycin is very active against breast cancer stem cells. However, salimomycin was not electrochemically active in the potential window for the phosphate buffer. Salinomycin formed coordination compounds with transition metal ions. Changes in the electrochemical behavior of those ions in the presence of salinomycin provided a basis for detection.
