In the thrown-away society that we live in, electronic waste is disposed of without concern for the metal content. When released into the environment some metals are toxic, and proper disposal requires new methods for separating them before being sent to a landfill. This project focuses on separating cadmium, nickel, zinc, and cobalt from aqueous media using thiosemicarbazone (TSC) chelating ligands impregnated on a solid support. Based on previous research done with TSC compounds, our ligands should exhibit high affinity for metals in the pH 8 range. Ligands of phenanthrene quinone (PQ-TSC) and benzoyl pyridine (BZP-TSC) will be investigated across a range of pH values and various ligand concentrations to evaluate the extraction of the metals. By paring extraction chromatography and radiometric counting techniques, this work could be useful in determining efficient removal of certain metals from electronic waste. Synthesis, chromatography methods, and extraction data will be presented.
