Zeolites are porous aluminosilicate materials composed of tetrahedral silicon and aluminum building blocks that are joined by bridging oxygen atoms that carry a partial negative charge and require charge compensating cations to maintain electroneutrality. These cations are not rigorously bound to the structure and retain considerable mobility. The mobility of the charge compensating cations residing in the molecular scale zeolite pores is often of critical importance to the material’s usefulness and performance. Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Spectroscopy (DRIFT) is used to measure long-range solid state intercrystallite cation diffusion between zeolite ZSM-5 and Zeolite A using pyridine as a probe molecule. Current studies have focused upon the long range diffusion of Na+ with Co+2, Cu+2, Pb+2, and Ni+2 cations. Differences in the relative rates of diffusion provide data useful in formulating a mechanistic theory of solid state ion diffusion in porous aluminosilicate materials.
