Feral swine cause $1.5 billion dollars in damage costs annually in the United States. Efforts to control this population have focused on sodium nitrite as a toxicant. A peanut paste bait has been developed to deliver sodium nitrite to feral swine. A quantitative method utilizing ion chromatography was developed to assess the preparation of these baits and determine their stability over time.<br/><br/>Samples were extracted with chloroform to break up the bait sample, then extracted with water. Extracts were chromatographed using a gradient of potassium hydroxide in water as the mobile phase. Recovery of fortified peanut paste baits ranging from 1% to 15% sodium nitrite ranged from 91.5 to 92.2% with relative standard deviations of 2.6% - 3.6%. This method successfully determined sodium nitrite in prepared baits with a limit of detection of 3.6 µg/g.
