Iron (II) complexes with a tetrastyrylbisphosphinoethane (TSPE) ligand were synthesized and investigated to attempt reversible N2 binding in a natural gas purification application. The identity was confirmed by 1H NMR signals at –29 ppm and a 31P NMR signal at 80 ppm as well as by X-ray crystallography. Thermodynamic and kinetic measurements of the Fe(TSPE)2HCl reactivity with small molecules such as CH3CN and N2 as well as its incorporation into highly cross-linked, porous polymers will be presented.
