There are many data on contaminant transformation by various abiotic reductants, including iron sulfides (esp. mackinawite, FeS), iron oxides (esp. magnetite, Fe<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>), and zerovalent iron (ZVI). Recently, there has been renewed interest in these processes because (i) of evidence that abiotic reduction can play a significant role in natural attenuation of contaminants, and (ii) realization the interactions between sulfide and zerovalent iron can significantly alter reactivity in ways that may be beneficial. The effects of sulfidation on reactivity apply to rates of contaminant degradation, selectivity between product formation pathways, and efficiency of contaminant degradation vs. side reactions. The significance of sulfidation on these three types of reactivity has been evaluated quantitatively by compiling and comparing data from many sources. The results suggest that the overall effect of sulfidation may vary with contaminant type, which, in turn, maybe be indicative of differences in reaction mechanisms.
