Previous investigations have shown that 1,8-anthraquinone-18-crown-5 undergoes internal charge transfer when metal cations interact with the intraannular carbonyl group within the macrocycle, turning on luminescence.  In this system, the anthraquinone moiety is both the fluorophore and a potential electrochemical (EC) subunit, since the quinone can easily be reduced.  We have conducted spectroelectrochemical investigations using this same system for both the radical anion and the dianion in acetonitrile followed by both UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, in the absence and presence of added metal ions, that shows a dramatic enhancement in the fluorescence intensity compared to the unreduced macrocycle.  We have built new spectroelectrochemical cells involving flow-through and standard configurations to help quantify these spectroscopic changes.  Our initial investigations on immobilizing these sensors at electrode surfaces will also be presented.<br/>
