Layer-by-layer (LBL) assemblies have been of great interest for a variety of applications. The functional films are fabricated from alternate adsorption of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes, biological species, inorganic nanoparticles, etc. However, incorporation of a small organic dye and properties of the film were seldom studied. In this paper, Alizarin Red S (1,2-dihydroxy-9,10-anthraquinone-3-sulfonate), a small molecular dye with only one sulfonic group and showing different colors by varying pH, was employed to construct colorful LBL films with poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) and poly(4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) via different adsorption processes. Film growth pattern and UV-vis spectra of the films as function of number of bilayers were compared. Electrochemical properties of the films were also studied by cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry. The results showed that different adsorption processes had great effect on the optical and electrochemical properties of the Alizarin Red S-based LBL films.
