Our research is focused on accessing orthogonal reactivity of carbonyls by intercepting their polarity-inverted ketyl radical reactivity. Whereas typical methods for ketyl radical generation require strong reductants (E &gt; 2.2 V), we have recently developed an approach for employing significantly milder conditions (E = 1.1 V) for accessing these useful species through atom transfer radical addition pathways. This anomeric activation strategy for accessing ketyl radicals from carbonyls with 1100 mV milder reductants allows for the development of unprecedented new reactivity, including redox neutral transformations, as well as divergent strategies for synthesizing highly selective products through unique mechanisms.
