Increased threats of resistance cases to antimicrobial agents by microorganisms have suggested the need for consistent discovery and development of new antibiotic drugs. Fluorescent carbon dot (CD), microscopic carbon nanoparticles with a wide variety of external preservation effects, has recently been demonstrated to terminate or inhibit the growth of numerous microorganisms by tailoring CDs to specific bacteria. Unlike conventional fluorescent quantum dots, the use of CDs is favorable due to its biocompatibility (lack of heavy metal) and its solubility in aqueous medium. In this work, a new conjugate material was made using a classical antibiotic and the carbon nanomaterial (CD). The new material was subsequently explored as a possible antimicrobial agent. The preliminary data indicates that the new material have bactericidal effect on <i>Escherichia coli </i>(<i>E. coli</i>). Future work will explore the mechanism of action of the material. In addition, a comprehensive evaluation of the material’s toxicity in mammalian cell models will be carried out.
