The Au(III)/Au(I) redox couple is substantially higher in energy than that of neighboring platinum group transition metals. This has traditionally been cited as the underlying cause of instability in these complexes and as an excuse for the lack of Au(I)/Au(III) redox catalysis. We present studies on the synthesis and characterization of stable Au(III) complexes and on their subsequent reductive elimination reactivity. The high redox potential of Au enables classes reductive eliminations previously unobserved with other transition metals to occur, including challenging, medicinally relevant bond-forming processes. Selected applications to synthesis will also be presented.
