A major challenge in C-H functionalization has been to achieve site selectivity without relying on the inherent reactivity of the substrate or resorting to the use of directing groups. This presentation will describe our recent advances in achieveing catalyst-controlled C-H functionalization the carbene-induced C-H insertion reaction. The focus of this talk will be on site-selective reactions on unactivated C-H bonds. Chiral dirhodium tetracarboxylate catalysts have been developed that can selectively cause functionalization to occur at either primary, secondary or tertiary C-H bonds, simply by using the appropriate catalyst. The scope of these transformations and their compatibility with other functional groups will be described.
