The synthesis of monodisperse colloidal semiconductors nanocrystals (NCs) with controlled composition, size and shape and surface functionalization yield ideal building blocks for the assembly of new electronic thin films and devices. The tunable optical properties of dispersed/isolated NC fluorophors (e.g., phosphors, imaging agents) are already being harnessed in display and medical technology. In contrast, the exploitation of the NCs as the electronic transport layers in devices is at an earlier stage but growing in interest (e.g., QLEDs, PVs, sensors, thermoelectrics and transistors). Recent advances in creating strongly-coupled NC films look poised to move this second class of electronic transport applications forward. In this talk, I will briefly outline the current state of the art in synthesis, purification, and integration of size and shape controlled single-phase semiconductor NCs as well as core-shell and heterodimer particles (heterostructures) as building blocks. I will emphasize the role of chemical tailoring of NC shape and ligand structure in programming the assembly of NC monolayers and thin films. These NCs can be induced to assemble into single-component, binary NC superlattices providing a scalable route to the production of multi-functional thin films. Strategies to direct the assembly of the NCs into crystalline, glassy, and aperiodic structures will be discussed. The power of NC hetero-integration I will be illustrated by progress in the co-assembly of NCs tailored alternately to enhance charge separation or the accelerate charge localization and recombination. Semiconductor NCs (Quantum Dots) solids that exhibit strong electronic, optical coupling will be emphasized. We are pushing to realize solution processable NC solids with a new 3D band structure and high carrier mobilities (&gt;30 cm2V-1S-1) and harness these in discrete devices and complex circuits.
