Converting renewable biomass into commodity chemicals is a key strategy for moving away from petroleum based feedstocks. One significant challenge is that biomass-derived compounds are typically highly oxygenated polyols, which are insoluble in most organic solvents and are difficult to chemically manipulate. Therefore, the deoxygenation of these compounds is crucial for converting these polyols to usable chemicals for applications in materials, fuels, and lubricants. Catalyst development as well as applications to forming new and known polymers will be described.
