We will discuss how aggregation, solvation, and mixed aggregation of highly functionalized lithium enolates influence reactivity and selectivity. The work finds its origins in unconnected collaborations between chemists at Cornell and Merck, Dupont-Merck, and Sanofi-Aventis in which the industrial problems posed the seminal questions. The talk will focus on several iconic enolates (Evans and Myers) and how they connect to plant-scale lithium enolate chemistry at Pfizer and Genentech. The synergies of academic-industrial collaborations are central.
