In this experiment, metalloporhyrins, specifically Ni-TPP, were used in an attempt to form self-assembled monolayers on a Au(111) surface. Although Ni-TPP is a flat molecule, it has been shown to adsorb on gold in a chiral fashion. Research with these SAMs could lead to advances in nanotechnology, as well as to the development of stereospecific catalysts. This type of catalyst could be incredibly useful in organic synthesis, producing chirally pure products. This is especially important in pharmaceutical production. The samples were viewed using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). Different metalloporphyrins and solutions were also used to attempt to form these monolayers. Some promising results were found and will be shared.
