In recent years trivalent luminescent lanthanides have gained increasing attention due to their application in analytical, biological, biomedical, and medical application as catalysts, diagnostic tools, and contrasting agents. Due to their ability to form stable conformation complexes, their large stokes shift, and sensitivity to local environment, lanthanides chelated to an organic chromophore have potential to act as non-invasive biological probes through a metal-ligand energy transfer. Non-invasive luminescent lanthanide probes governed by these metal-ligand energy transfers have application in diagnostic analysis. <br/>Due to its long lived excited state, Eu(III) is one of the most emissive lanthanide ions. However, the long lived excited state of europium is dependent on its metal ion environment. Through studying changes in chelation of europium with varying pH, under steady-state luminescence and time-resolved luminescence, one can observe the species that is formed in each case.<br/>Tetracycline (TC) is a commonly used antibiotic that prevents the growth and spread of bacterial infections. The biological activity of TC is determined by its complexation structural behavior (three different TC species can be observed in solution). Thus, each TC species has the potential capability of forming a unique complex with Eu(III), which was determined through the use of steady-state luminescence, time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy, and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), the emissions analog of circular dichroism (CD).
