Tetrasubstituted pyrazines were prepared as potential synthetic intermediates via the condensation of diaminomaleonitrile and 1-phenyl-1,2-propanedione via cycloaddition in hot ethanol. The tetrasubstituted pyrazines were selectively reduced to the corresponding hexahydro derivatives while retaining the nitrile groups. A second route from the tetrasubstitued pyrazines converted the nitrile groups into tetrazoles to give ditetrazolopyrazines, which also afforded hexahydropyrazines via selective reduction using a mild reducing agent. The characterization and properties of these compounds will be presented.
