The Chicago State University (CSU) S-STEM Program, supported by the National Science Foundation, seeks to increase the educational attainment of CSU students and encourage more students to think of themselves as scientists.  As a predominantly minority institution (85% African American and 70% female), CSU is a critical part of the pipeline to increase diversity in STEM fields.  Chemistry and Physics majors in the S-STEM Program receive tuition support at CSU, engage in a summer program based on the University of California-Berkeley Compass Project, participate in early research experiences during their first year at CSU, and are enrolled in a peer and faculty mentoring program.  Students also receive funding to support travel to attend conferences and present research and explore graduate programs.  Preliminary results from our first two cohorts will be discussed as will lessons learned as our first cohort graduates this spring.  Student, faculty, and evaluator impressions on the effectiveness of our emphasis on the development of community combined with academic and scientific support will be presented as we seek to build in the resources of our students who are mainly drawn from high-poverty neighborhoods on the south side of Chicago.<br/>
