Chemical transformation of shale gas components including methane and ethane under a mild condition is quite challenging. We have explored activation of methane and ethane with different types of oxidants including H2O2 and O2 in different liquid environment at relatively low temperatures. Zeolite-based single site catalysts were prepared for this oxidative activation. Both Pd and Rh sites singly dispersed in the microspores of aluminosilicates exhibit high activity for oxidation of methane and ethane to acetic acid, formic acid, or methanol. EXAFS studies showed that the Pd and Rh cations does not form oxide nanoclusters but have specific coordination with oxygen atoms of the internal wall of aluminosilicates. These single-site catalysts exhibit a higher activity than molecular catalysts. In addition, I will discuss the diffusion limit of shale gas components in water and other solvents and how such a limit in diffusion influences catalytic performance.
