A selective mono and di- annulation of indigo has been developed as a means of synthesizing tailored donor-acceptor constructs for use as organic semiconducting materials.  This method allows for fine control over the electronic and physical properties of the compounds which can be easily modified in a modular fashion.  Utilizing this new chemistry, electroactive molecules have been developed which are capable of ordered self-assembly.  Of particular interest is a triphenylamine based compound which has been confirmed to form nanofibers with scanning electron microscopy (SEM).  Controlling aggregation in the solid state is predicted to facilitate alignment of molecular orbitals aiding in intermolecular charge transfer. Device work is underway wherein these self-assembling materials are used as the active layer in organic field effect transistors (OFET) and as non-fullerene acceptors in organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices.<br/>
