We report the design and fabrication of a simple 3D printed filter fluorometer for use in laboratory learning and other applications. Using accessible computer-aided design (CAD) software, such as Tinkercad and Inventor Professional, previous filter fluorometer devices produced in our lab were improved upon in terms of portability and ease of data collection. These previous models employed an open design to challenge the “black box” perception of analytical instruments. In response to user feedback, the models shared here are completely contained in a 3D printed housing. However, these devices still enable student understanding of instrument design and function, while allowing for quicker set up and data acquisition. An effective standalone design was achieved, featuring a simple housing with a lid, interchangeable filters, and simple electronics. Once fabricated and assembled, these devices perform well in a range of laboratory activities, including the quantitative determination of luminescent analytes at the ppm or ppb level. This fluorometer provides an easy to use tool for teaching the analytical process, basics of circuity, and instrument design. Most significantly, these inexpensive designs are produced for around $30 each. This allows for increased student engagement with instrumentation as opposed to simply sharing one fluorometer across an entire class. While the 3D printed filter fluorometer design presented here is not intended to replace commercial instrumentation, it successfully provides an inexpensive and versatile tool for engaging students at all levels in the exploration of hands-on quantitative analysis. The instrument described here is appropriate for teaching and outreach activities at the high school and undergraduate level.
