The biological activity of flavonoids sparked an interest in the development of synthetic procedures that can conveniently give access to these molecules and their derivatives. This project focused on developing a simple, efficient and green synthetic method for novel derivatives of flavonoids in ionic liquids. A task-specific ionic liquid, 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium hydroxide that can act both as a base catalyst and the reaction medium was synthesized and used in flavonoid synthesis. The successful synthesis of the ionic liquid, 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium hydroxide, was confirmed using NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. A two-step synthetic strategy was employed for the synthesis of flavonoids. A series of novel flavonoids were synthesized from 2’-hydroxyacetopheneone and benzoyl chloride derivatives. The ionic liquid, 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium hydroxide was used as the reaction medium for both steps of the flavonoid synthesis. The flavonoids were purified by flash column chromatography, and characterized by <sup>1</sup>H and <sup>13</sup>C NMR spectroscopy. The efforts are underway to study the biological activities of these flavonoids.
