Pincer ligand systems can be used to capture a variety of anions and metal ions. A two-sided pincer, dubbed a duplex ligand system, has the ability for dual capture (Figure). It has been found that the duplex pincers possess gelation properties in a variety of different solvents dependent upon the R-groups attached to the ligand. The chemical and physical properties of the new ligand platform, including its gelation and dual capture capabilities, promise applications in a variety of different fields. Potential applications in separation science, anion and cation capture and recognition, sensing and in biomedicine can be envisioned.
