At many universities, silver nitrate is used for the identification of an unknown chloride concentration in analytical chemistry labs and a resulting product is silver chloride. Silver chloride is insoluble in water and typically discarded as waste. For this study, multiple methods have been tested to convert silver chloride into silver nitrate, a useful compound. By comparing the percent recovery, purity, cost, and time required of the processes, an ideal method was identified to convert silver chloride waste into a useful species. This process will reduce waste and cost for the university. The presentation will focus on the most efficient method found as well as how using this method in chemistry labs can help reduce the waste of silver chloride.
