Layered double hydroxides (LDH) also referred to as anionic clays are a class of important materials comprising positively charged metal hydroxide layers with anions in the interlayer. Unlike hydrotalcite, which is a Mg-Al LDH whose structure is based on brucite, Li-Al LDH comprises monovalent Li and its structure is based on Al(OH)3. They can be crystallized with different compositions and have a potential for several applications. Among the others, recently it has been shown that it can be used for Li sequestration from brine. In the current work, we have examined the formation enthalpies of [Li-Al-Cl] LDHs with different compositions. We also determine the interaction energies of this material with several alkali chlorides in order to determine the LDH composition that interacts selectively with Li over the others cations which are present in the brine.
