Diversity of highly porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been limited by the requirement that the linkers possess high symmetry and at most two different types of coordinating group. Here we report a robust and porous MOF of high symmetry crystallized from a low symmetry linker bearing three distinct types of coordinating group. This MOF belongs to a previously unknown topology termed tto. This work suggests that simple, symmetric linkers are not a necessity for formation of crystalline extended structures and demonstrates that new, more complex topologies may be obtained with heterotopic linkers. These results raise the possibility that a much richer array of MOFs than those reported thus far may be attainable with linkers of greater complexity.
