Metal ions at enzyme active sites often are bonded facially to three amino acid residues with up to three “open” sites available for binding and activation of substrates. The 2-His-1-carboxylate triad is a particularly common binding motif. Using tridentate N,N,O bis-pyrazolyl-carboxylate scorpionate ligands, we synthesized several new complexes of magnesium and first row transition metals as part of our efforts to synthetically mimic metalloenzymes. Synthesis and structural characterization of these complexes by X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and IR spectroscopy, as well as the effects of increasing ligand steric bulk on the structures of these metal complexes, will be presented.
