With modern medical technology, biosensors are increasingly being used each day for examining patients’ health. They have become common enough for diabetics to have their own user friendly biosensor for monitoring glucose levels. Currently, standard biosensors use enzymes for their selectivity and specificity; however, this makes it challenging to interface different enzymes with electrodes and create unique systems for different analytes. Magnetic nanoparticles provide an opportunity to artificially add specificity and selectivity for biomarkers, and have a greater stability with a large potential for modifications. Experiments were conducted to create a standard protocol for a rapid synthesis of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles to be used with various potential surface ligands. The electrochemical effects of the different surfactants were studied, confirming their high specificity and moderate selectivity. Currently, research is being performed to create functionalized magnetic particles by modifying previously synthesized ligands via click chemistry.<br/>
