Hydrazine and its derivatives such as 1,1dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) and 1methylhydrazine (MMH) are energetic molecules which are widely used as fuels in rocket propellant. While all rocket propellants are hazardous materials, which is simply due to the very nature of their applications, the hydrazines face the additional dilemma of being carcinogenic vapor toxins. In this context liquid salts derived from hydrazine and its methylated derivatives have several advantages over the neutral parents such as low vapor pressure and higher densities. Recently, novel quaternary ammonium/hydrazinium salts were prepared by the reaction of dichloromethane and 1,1dimethylhydrazine. The resulting salts contain a haloalkyl group as well as halide anions. These salts caught our attention due to their simple preparation and the potential for further chemistry involving both, the anion and covalently bound halide. Here we describe the synthesis and characterization of new salts based on derivatized 1,1dimethylhydrazinium cations.
