The Aerosol Impact Spectrometer (AIS) is a versatile apparatus that can be used to measure velocity-dependent impact dynamics for nanoparticles. The most recent results from the aerosol impact spectrometer (AIS) will be presented, concerning particle impact dynamics with surfaces. Particles generated by a variety of sources including: electrospray ionization, liquid metal ionization, and dust-needle acceleration can be trapped and characterized by the AIS. A linear accelerator allows a variable potential to accelerate/decelerate single particles to a variety of velocities. These particles are impacted onto a known surface with a charge detection device situated to record incident and rebounding particle velocities. As the impact velocity of particles increases elastic scattering begins to be dominated by inelastic deformation of the particle. By measuring the change in rebounding velocity of the particle with respect to a variety of incident velocities the coefficient of restitution (CoR) for a given particle species can be measured. This paired with the charge detection mass spectrometry (CDMS) capabilities of the AIS allows for well characterized (individual mass <i>and</i> charge), and mass selected particle collision dynamics to be measured. Measurements of the CoR of PSL spheres and applications to tin and LaB<sub>6</sub> nanoparticles will be presented.
