<br/><br/>The herbicide benzobicyclon can be utilized in rice fields in California by inhibiting the activity of 4-hydroxyphenolpyruvatedehydrogenase causing plant bleaching followed by necrosis and plant death. For EPA studies and analysis, the degradation products have been synthesized for analysis at the Department of Environmental Toxicology at UC Davis by the Tjeerdema research group. The synthetic scheme and results for synthesis of a known degradation product, 3-(3-(2-chloro-4-(methylsulfonyl)phenyl)-3-oxopropanoyl)cyclopentane-1-carboxylic acid will be presented.
