Using cotton as the source of cellulose, various environmentally benign conditions were used to investigate the degradation of the biopolymer with the ultimate goal of producing ethanol.  While no ethanol was detected, various qualitative tests did confirm the biopolymer did undergo some degradation. Our results confirm the possible use of environmentally benign conditions  to access the enormous energy potential in natural  biopolymer feedstocks.<br/>
