Catalytic studies of rhenium catalyzed olefin hydrogenation were conducted both experimentally and computationally. Methyltrioxorhenium (MTO) was used in the presence and absence of a Lewis acid to study the hydrogenation reaction of multiple olefins. Full conversion of olefins to alkanes was observed in most cases after an induction period. Computational studies utilizing Density Functional Theory (DFT) were completed to explore the possible mechanisms for the hydrogenation of olefins by MTO and to identify the active species in the catalytic cycle.
