The study of excess properties of non-ideal binary mixtures of organic liquids can lead to a better understanding of the behavior of these and other similar compounds, allowing for better predictability for uses in other applications. The densities and viscosities of mixtures of hexane/hexan-1-ol and anisole/methanol were studied at several temperatures, as well as the refractive indices of hexane/hexan-1-ol across eight wavelengths and several temperatures. From these measurements refractive index increments, excess volumes, and viscosity deviations were determined as functions of temperature. The viscosity data allowed for activation energies of flow to be determined using the model proposed by McAllister. Both systems showed negative excess volumes which generally became slightly more negative as temperature increased. The hexane/hexan-1-ol system showed negative refractive index increments which decreased with temperature. The results suggest that the intermolecular forces between hexane/hexan-1-ol and anisole/methanol are more attractive than those within the pure substances resulting from enhanced geometric interactions and dipole-induced-dipole effects.
