The Suzuki-Miyaura reaction is now widely used across the chemical industry, including applications in the pharmaceutical industry. To engage pre-health majors taking organic chemistry, we have designed a one-week, three-hour laboratory experiment in which groups of students use different reaction conditions to prepare a pharmaceutically active product by the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction. The students isolate the product, analyze the purity via HPLC, and report their results to the rest of their class. The students then consider factors such as yield, purity, reagent and solvent cost, and catalyst turnover number to identify the optimal conditions for this synthesis.
