Diazeniumdiolates (NONOates) are a class of organic compounds containing the [N(O)NO]- moiety. The NONOate compounds have attracted a lot of attention because of their ability to release the bioregulatory molecule nitric oxide (NO) under physiological conditions. Carbon-bound diazeniumdiolates (C-NONOates) are among the most widely known NONOates. It is known that some C-NONOates interact directly with the metal centers of some metalloenzymes to release NO. Consequently, we are interested in exploring the interactions of C-NONOates with metalloenzyme active sites to establish structure-function relationships in these systems. We have reported previously that NONOates may bind to Fe porphyrins through a bidentate binding mode. In this study, we report the synthesis, characterization and molecular structure of a Ru nitrosyl C-NONOate porphyrin complex that shows a monodentate NONOate binding mode. We will also present the redox behavior of this complex using cyclic voltammetry.
