Strong coupling of optical and molecular vibrational states is a promising route towards the modification of molecular bond properties without changing the constituent atoms or bonding structure. Vibrational strong coupling of organometallic complex ions in aqueous solutions is demonstrated using microfluidic devices. Co-localizing the molecular vibration states of the ferrocyanide ion with Fabry-Pérot cavity optical states resonating at the same frequency results in the formation of two polariton states associated with the chemical bond of the cyanide ligands. It was found that the complex can exhibit strong vibrational coupling while dissolved in solution at moderate concentrations due to its large molar extinction coefficient and narrow resonance bandwidth. Combining the robust fluid control of microfluidics with the ability to modify chemical bond properties via vibrational strong coupling may lead to novel, currently unattainable chemistries.
