Synthetic dinitrosyl iron compounds (DNICs) are known to display a variety of chemical properties. Recent interest in DNICs has grown due to their significant biological relevance which may include the ability to serve as entities for the storage and transport of nitric oxide. We have prepared a series of dinitrosyl iron complexes with the general form Fe(NO)2LL' (L and L' = phosphine donor ligands) from the reactions of Fe(NO)2(CO)2 and phosphine donor ligands. These compounds have been characterized by a variety of instrumental methods including infrared spectroscopy and 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopy.
