Given compressed time restrictions for initial compliance with the terms of the Settlement Agreement, there’s now time for reflective analysis.  While there are certainly elements to build upon, substantial opportunities for improvement remain.  Advancing a sustainable laboratory safety culture must be supported by upper administration and fostered by faculty.  Campus, school/college, and departmental-based safety committees need to actively engage their peers and begin to look at leading rather than lagging indicators.  Approaches to standard operating procedures can be more methodical, data driven, and incorporate greater application of risk assessment tools.  Information Technology tools, while holding tremendous potential, need to be integrated and accurate.  Collaborative efforts between research and administrative roles holds tremendous potential to develop practical solutions while fostering more collegial relationships across academic roles.
