Transparent cassava-based cellulose film was successfully produced by dissolving in carbon dioxide switchable polarity solvent and regeneration in ethanol. The polar solvent in the presence of protonated 1, 8-Diazabicyclo [5.4.0] undec-7-ene [DBUH]+ and ethylene bicarbonate anion [O2COCH2CH2OCO2]2- was generated by carbonation of the solution that contains 1, 8-Diazabicyclo [5.4.0] undec-7-ene [DBU] and ethylene glycol (EG). To enhance the transparency of the film, the different of pressure and temperature of the carbon dioxide were studied. The result shows that the increase of pressure while the temperature was stable affected the improvement in solubility of cellulose, however; the white solid was precipitated at the exceed point of the pressure. The soluble cellulose was cast and then analyzed using Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Thermogravimetry analysis (TG) and also Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). FTIR result indicates the reduction of inter hydrogen bond between cellulose chains after the dissolution while TG result also shows the decrease of the decomposition temperature of the film compares with original cellulose. Furthermore, the crystal structure of cellulose was changed from cellulose type I to cellulose type II.
