Our American Chemical Society chapter at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology emphasizes chemistry education through community outreach and tutoring. Our outreach is aimed toward K-12 students in the Rapid City area. Interactive demonstrations are one of our main focuses so that students can participate in simple experiments themselves while also learning about laboratory safety. The ice cream that our chapter makes with liquid nitrogen is also a favorite amongst the community.<br/>Not only do we do outreach amongst the community, but on our own campus as well. Many of our members are tutors through multiple organizations on campus for classes such as general chemistry, organic chemistry and more. We also perform demonstrations and shows for National Chemistry Week and Engineering week, which are open to students on campus as well as the public. Our involvement in homecoming celebrations and athletic events exposes non-departmental students, faculty, and community members to the discipline of chemistry.<br/>In addition to all of our educational endeavors, our chapter hosts social events. Every year we have a picnic and invite the student body and faculty so they can learn more about our organization. The ACS chapter at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology demonstrates that an appreciation of chemistry can be promoted in an educational and inviting environment.
