Trace amounts of potentially toxic metals can be found in cosmetics. This study is aimed at providing information on the risk associated with human exposure to metals in eye makeup such as powders, liners, and mascaras. In the current research, the levels of lead, cadmium, and chromium are being assessed using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) after digestion with a mixture of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid. The cosmetics will be grouped and compared according to their prices, as well as their location of production (United States or China). Concentrations of metals tested varied 6- to 20-fold, depending on the brand and type of makeup (<i>e.g.</i>, eye liner or mascara) analyzed. These values will be compared with values for the same metals in more expensive cosmetics. The results of this project will provide insight into whether or not additional action by regulatory agencies may be appropriate.
