The understanding of CO2 activation/conversion is one of the key problems in today’s heterogeneous catalysis to provide strategies to address climate change. By spectroscopically studying the hydrogenation and reverse water-gas shift reactions of CO2 on model Ni(111) catalysts under reaction conditions we could identify key reaction intermediates and confirm the mechanism proposed by DFT investigations. This is of particular relevance because the reaction intermediate CO is known to induce etching at higher pressures of the other Ni crystal orientations and producing Ni(111) facets (see K. F Peters et al. Adsorption of Carbon Monoxide on Ni(110 in PRL, 86, (2001), 5325). Thus our model study therefore helps to understand reaction mechanism of the real catalytic system, i.e. Ni Nano particles on silica support. A further investigation of metal support interactions would provide a more complete picture of CO2 activation/conversion on Ni based catalysts.
