Polyaniline-MnO2 nanocomposites were synthesized via chemical oxidation of aniline-HCl monomer in the presence of α-MnO2 nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 10 to 70 nm. The polymerization reaction was carried out at 0-2 oC in 1.0 M aqueous HCl solution. Composite coated electrodes were prepared on Ni as current collector for capacitance measurements. Surface characterization of composite samples was carried out by SEM and AFM. Structural characterization was accomplished by XRD, FTIR, Raman, and UV-vis spectroscopies. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was utilized to measure the capacitance property of nanocomposite-coated electrodes in a three-electrode system. Surface characterization showed a fibrous polymer structure with clearly visible poly-dispersed MnO2 nanoparticles. FTIR and Raman analysis of samples revealed the expected emeraldine salt form of doped polyaniline. XRD analysis showed a broad peak around 2θ angle of 25o. High capacitive properties of the nanocomposite-coated electrode demonstrated the suitability of the polyaniline-MnO2 nanocomposite synthesized in this research for supercapacitance applications.
