A new course to be discussed implements discovery-based research experiences into the undergraduate organic chemistry laboratory as a redesign of traditional skill-focused labs. The laboratory is designed around discovery of bio-active small molecules, based on multi-step reaction design, “fragment-based” synthesis, and using a readily analyzed biomolecular nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) experiment. Fragment-based synthesis with protein NMR analysis has yet to be incorporated in an organic chemistry laboratory, but offers a route for independent molecular design, tractable syntheses, and exposure to macromolecule:small-molecule analysis. One key component outlined in the new the new ACS guidelines for a chemistry major. This talk will describe this collaborative initiative with Prof Scott Bur to be implemented in the Gustavus Adolphus College’s organic chemistry labs in Fall 2017. Aspects of curricular design, scalability, and results and assessments obtained from a recurring January term short course will be discussed. Preliminary thoughts on the challenges of creating reflective writing and online survey tools will also be addressed.
