Platinum(II) triamine complexes with diethylenetriamine and N,N,N',N',N"-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine ligands have been previously studied by several laboratories including our own. We are currently studying the use of dipropylenetriamine (dipn) and N,N,N',N'-tetramethyldipropylenetriamine (Me4dipn) ligands in platinum(II) complexes. The additional carbon in the chain creates a pair of six-membered chelate rings that will increase the N-Pt-N angles and also change the orientations of the hydrogens or methyl groups attached to the nitrogen atoms near the available coordination site. We are studying these complexes and their reactions with methionine and guanine both experimentally (NMR spectroscopy) and computationally (molecular mechanics calculations) and comparing the results with the diethylenetriamine systems. Reaction of [Pt(Me4dipn)(NO3)]+ with guanosine 5'-GMP leads to reaction within hours, and two H8 signals are observed by NMR spectroscopy, suggesting slow rotation around the Pt-N7 bond for [Pt(Me4dipn)(5'-GMP)].
