Carbon-carbon bond formation via acyl radical intermediates has been established as an extremely powerful method of ketone formation. Reactions of acyl radicals with alkenes have generally been limited to the hydroacylation, whereby new C-acyl and C-H bond are established. Oxidative transformations, carried out with photoredox catalysts, the method described here, that involve the intermediacy of acyl radicals, or their equivalent, have not been comprehensively explored. This project examined the aza-acetal functional groups as useful intermediates for oxidative functionalization of aldehyde C-H bonds by alkenes.
