In this project diazonium gold(III) salts of the formula [R-4-C6H4-N≡N]AuCl4 will be used for developing “negative” fingerprints using electroless reductive grafting on reducing metal surfaces. Negative fingerprints are those in which the developer is deposited between the ridges. Diazonium gold(III) salts have low reduction potential and in some examples of diazonium cations with electron withdrawing substitutions the reduction potential is virtually 0 V or even positive. The low reduction potential facilitates the electroless deposition on metal surfaces. Diazonium salts with electron withdrawing substituents will be tried such as R = CN, NO2, Br, and CF3. In pursuing our study we used several spectroscopic tools to probe the surface to verify the adherence of the gold only versus gold-organic nano film. FR-IR and EDS confirmed the presence of the organic film. AFM also was used to study the surface morphology.
