Zeolites A and Y are well-known catalysts for petroleum cracking and are used in gas separation. These microporous materials are potentially useful in trapping heavy metal ions in the environment. To discuss the thermodynamic stability and ion exchange process from an energetic perspective, we present new thermodynamic data, obtained by high temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry, for a series of zeolites A and Y with different ion exchanged (Mn 2+ , Co 2+ , Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ ) cations. Their stability trends related to the transition metal cations properties are summarized with other analogous materials, such as transition metal containing spinel, olivine, and pyroxene. The enthalpies of exchange of transition metals in zeolites A and Y with sodium in aqueous solution show that these zeolites could be reasonably effective sorbents for heavy metal waste in the aqueous environment.
